Shocking video footage captured the dramatic moment a suspect sprinted through the hotel lobby during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, only to be swiftly apprehended by secret service agents.
The individual, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, was armed with firearms and knives when he forcibly entered the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening.
In a video shared by Donald Trump on Truth Social, the suspect was seen evading security barricades as secret service personnel rushed to intercept him.
During the altercation, one officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to their bullet-resistant vest, while the assailant was subdued without sustaining injuries and subsequently taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Authorities confirmed Allen’s arrest on two charges related to firearms, including assaulting an officer with a lethal weapon.
Reportedly a guest at the Washington Hilton event, the suspect has been detained and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Law enforcement officials believe he acted alone during the incident but have not disclosed a specific target or motive.
Following the incident, Trump, who escaped unharmed, was quickly escorted off the stage by secret service agents, including the heavily armed counter assault team.
Vice President JD Vance was promptly removed from the premises, while Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were carefully escorted out. Trump, albeit briefly stumbling, was aided by his security team as he left the scene.
After a brief stay in the hotel’s secure presidential suite, Trump was advised by the secret service to return to the White House, and the event organizers made efforts to resume the interrupted proceedings.
In a statement at the White House hours later, Trump, still attired in formal wear, remarked, “When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone. They seem to think he was a lone wolf.”
The shooting incident occurred just outside the expansive ballroom where the dinner was taking place, disrupting the function shortly after it commenced. The annual event, dedicated to celebrating journalism and the First Amendment, came under heightened scrutiny as it marked Trump’s first attendance since assuming the presidency.
Trump expressed hope for the event to be rescheduled within 30 days, yet the breach by an armed individual raised immediate concerns about security measures at an occasion attended annually by high-ranking government officials.
