“Greggs Considers Vending Machines for Sausage Rolls”

Published:

Greggs enthusiasts might soon have the option to buy sausage rolls and other baked goods from a vending machine. The bakery chain is considering implementing “unattended retail solutions,” as stated by Richard Hutton, Greggs’ chief financial officer. These solutions would involve both automated and manual vending options.

While no specific launch date or locations have been disclosed yet, this development follows the successful introduction of three smaller Greggs Bitesize shops. Greggs recently reported a 17.9% decrease in its statutory pre-tax profits for the year ending December 27, down to £167.4 million compared to the previous year.

The decline in profits has been attributed in part to challenging market conditions and unusually hot weather. In 2025, Greggs opened a net total of 121 stores, expanding its footprint to 2,739 locations. The company aims to open around 120 more stores this year and has set long-term goals of surpassing 3,000 shops in the UK.

Roisin Currie, the CEO of Greggs, expressed optimism about a potential increase in consumer spending due to reduced inflationary pressures. However, she acknowledged that the retail environment remains challenging for customers. Despite recently raising prices on some items, Greggs has confirmed no further price hikes are planned for the year.

Additionally, Greggs shared the success of The Golden Flake Tavern, its first pub concept offering beer, located in Newcastle’s Fenwick department store. With over 20,000 visitors, the pub has sold more than 4,000 pints of Gosforth 1939 Lager and over 1,000 Pink Jammie Fizz cocktails, with the Sausage Roll & Mash dish proving to be the most popular choice.
