Global Leaders Push for Ceasefire in Israel-Lebanon Conflict

Published:

Keir Starmer and global leaders have urged Israel to halt its offensive in Lebanon while advocating for a lasting ceasefire between the US and Iran.

The Prime Minister has embarked on a visit to Saudi Arabia today to engage in discussions with Gulf counterparts, aiming to facilitate a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict.

This diplomatic mission follows Donald Trump’s retreat from doomsday proclamations, agreeing to a two-week truce just before the expiration of his ultimatum for Iran to reach a deal. Trump had previously issued dire warnings of civilization’s demise if Iran failed to end the conflict and reopen the vital shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, which had been obstructed by Tehran.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel has persisted in its airstrikes on Lebanon where it is in conflict with Hezbollah, a militia group backed by Iran.

A joint statement from the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, and the heads of the European Commission and European Council welcomed the ceasefire, emphasizing the need for prompt progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement to safeguard Iran’s civilian population and regional security while averting a potential global energy crisis.

The leaders expressed support for ongoing diplomatic endeavors and stressed the importance of all parties honoring the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. They also committed to ensuring the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

During his discussions with Gulf leaders, the Prime Minister will explore strategies to bolster the cessation of hostilities and devise plans for the permanent reopening of the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil and gas shipments. The closure of this passage has led to a surge in global oil prices.

Furthermore, Mr. Starmer is expected to meet with British and allied military personnel stationed in the region to express gratitude for their contributions.
