A prosecutor stated that a former gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s beating. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge for allegedly leading a group to kill the renowned 25-year-old rapper near the Las Vegas Strip. The prosecutor informed jurors that Davis ensured the shooters were prepared to carry out the attack when the opportunity arose, as revealed by Davis himself in recent public statements.
Defense lawyer Michael Sanft argued that after 30 years, investigators lack substantial evidence to support their case. Sanft discredited Davis’s statements, labeling them as unreliable and unverifiable. Shakur’s tragic death exacerbated the violent image associated with hip-hop culture during the era of “gangsta” rap, fueling the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.
Authorities revealed Davis as the orchestrator of a swift plan to avenge his nephew’s assault by Shakur and his entourage at the MGM Grand casino in 1996. The violent incident stemmed from animosity between two rival Los Angeles street gangs, the South Side Compton Crips led by Davis and Mob Piru associated with Marion (Suge) Knight and Death Row Records.
Davis allegedly provided the murder weapon to accomplices in a white Cadillac, leading to the fatal shooting of Shakur. Despite Davis’s confessions in interviews and his memoir, law enforcement has not disclosed the actual shooter. Davis’s trial, expected to last up to six weeks, may include testimony from Suge Knight, who was present during Shakur’s murder and is currently serving a prison sentence.
The case remained unsolved until Davis’s 2018 statements reignited the investigation. Davis’s memoir implicated him in Shakur’s killing, shedding new light on the long-dormant case. Ongoing speculation links the murders of Shakur and rival rapper Christopher Wallace, also known as Notorious B.I.G., under the Bad Boy Entertainment label, in a cycle of retaliation.
