“CPAC USA 2022: Trump Absence, Spectacle, and Political Shifts”

Published:

Thousands of devoted supporters of Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement gathered in Texas this week for the annual CPAC USA event, the largest convention of the American political right. Traditionally held near Washington DC, this year, the event shifted to a vast Gaylord Hotels resort on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, organized by Matt Schlapp.

The venue itself was a spectacle, resembling the grandeur of Disney World in Texas. The immense atrium housed a simulated western town with model railways, fountains, and rivers, evoking the ambiance of a theme park. While rumors circulated about Ted Cruz making a dramatic entrance by parachute, the absence of Donald Trump, who has been a regular speaker at CPAC for a decade, was palpable.

Despite Trump’s absence, attendees tried to remain optimistic, attributing his non-appearance to other commitments. However, Trump did find time to address a gathering of Saudi businessmen in Florida, leaving his loyal supporters pondering their significance in his priorities. Additionally, the presence of a sizable Iranian delegation at CPAC hinted at efforts to maintain unity within the movement regarding Trump’s stance on Iran.

Notable figures like Liz Truss, a recurring attendee at CPAC, refrained from engaging in controversial interviews this year, focusing on establishing a new “MEGA – Make England Great Again” movement. The event also witnessed an increased interest in British political figures beyond Nigel Farage, indicating a shift in preferences among attendees.

The atmosphere at CPAC displayed a radicalized sentiment, with January 6 rioters being hailed as heroes, marking a departure from previous years. Despite the unconventional dynamics, some traditions persisted, such as the lively Australian reception providing a brief respite for attendees amidst the political fervor.

In the midst of the peculiarities at CPAC, one constant remained – the enduring presence of Liz Truss, embodying the spirit of the event as it unfolded.
