A fearless explorer is preparing to embark on a challenging journey across the Atlantic Ocean in a boat the size of a wheelie bin. Andrew Bedwell, a six-foot-tall adventurer, aims to set a new world record for the shortest vessel to cross the ocean. Departing from Newfoundland, Canada, in mid-May, Bedwell anticipates a three-month solo voyage covering almost 2,000 miles back to the UK, without any accompanying support vessel.
Motivated by personal loss, Bedwell, a boat repair shop owner, seeks to raise funds for Cancer Research UK in honor of his late parents. He will endure cramped conditions aboard his micro-yacht, named The Big C Version Two, where he will be mostly seated and harnessed during rough weather but able to stand and perform exercises in good conditions. His sustenance will primarily consist of beef jerky, raisins, and nutrient-packed bars integrated into the boat’s structure for added insulation and durability.
Despite the risks involved, Bedwell, an experienced sailor who previously voyaged solo to the Arctic in a similar small boat, is resolute in his mission. His determination was evident in his decision to rebuild his vessel after a failed attempt caused by a leak in the frame, leading to the destruction of his initial boat in a mishap at port.
Expressing his unwavering commitment, Bedwell acknowledged the setbacks but emphasized his desire to inspire others through his perseverance. With a renewed boat and resolve, he is set to embark on his second Atlantic crossing, driven not only by the pursuit of a world record but also by the broader goal of encouraging others to challenge themselves and pursue their aspirations, no matter the obstacles.
