A visitor needed urgent medical attention after encountering the ‘most poisonous creatures in the world’ that have the potential to cause death in less than five minutes.
Guy Rowles, hailing from Australia, was participating in surfing activities in Fiji when he experienced a severe sting on his arm on the initial day of his vacation. Accompanied by his father in the water, the surfer fell off his board and removed the jellyfish tentacles from his body.
Rowles had been staying at Sujees Surf Stay at Cloudbreak, a renowned reef break in the Mamanuca Islands famous for its waves.
Narrating his ordeal to the surfing platform Stab on Monday, Rowles described the sudden intense sting on his arm, likening it to being scalded with hot oil. He recalled feeling a burning sensation in his arm, tightness in his chest, and experiencing convulsions on the boat where he was eventually brought aboard.
Following the incident, Rowles was swiftly taken to a hospital in Nadi, which was more than an hour away from the location of the incident. Concerned about his condition, he expressed his fears to his father, questioning whether he was going to survive the encounter.
Despite the seriousness of the injury, Rowles managed to survive the attack after receiving medical treatment. Reflecting on the experience, he emphasized the importance of perspective in life and how it can change drastically in such alarming situations.
Box jellyfish, characterized by their body shape, possess tentacles that can extend up to 10 feet and are equipped with nematocysts, microscopic harpoons attached to venom-filled bulbs. These marine creatures are capable of delivering a lethal sting that can lead to death within minutes, predominantly found in the Indo-Pacific region and northern parts of Australia.
Before Rowles’ encounter, the Fijian government had issued a health advisory regarding the presence of jellyfish in the waters. The alert urged caution and prompt medical attention in case of any signs and symptoms related to jellyfish stings.
