ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dies at 77

Published:

Frank Beard, the drummer for the famous Texas band ZZ Top, known for hits like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. He was in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family when he died, as confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, paid tribute to Beard, praising his drumming skills and dedication to the band over the past six decades.

ZZ Top, renowned for selling over 50 million records and achieving multiple No. 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, has received three Grammy Award nominations. In a statement, Gibbons expressed his commitment to continuing the band’s legacy as Beard had wished.

Forming the band in 1969, Beard, originally from Frankston, Texas, teamed up with Gibbons from their previous band, The Moving Sidewalks, and later brought in bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill. The trio drew inspiration from blues and rock influences, maintaining their original lineup for more than five decades. Their distinctive appearance, characterized by long beards and dark sunglasses, became iconic over the years.

ZZ Top’s music, known for its clever and witty lyrics, has been featured in various Hollywood films, solidifying their place in American music culture. Their unique sound, described as a fusion of rock, blues, and funk, earned them the title of a “Little Ol’ Band From Texas.” Hits like “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Cheap Sunglasses” propelled their success, with the 1983 album “Eliminator” introducing a more polished sound that included synthesizers and drum machines.

The band’s trademark bearded look was a result of a fortuitous accident during a break in 1976 when the members unintentionally grew their beards, a style that stuck with them over the years. Their rock-chic image, combined with catchy music videos featuring models and custom cars, resonated with audiences, particularly during the rise of MTV.

Despite Beard’s temporary absence from the band in 2025 due to health issues, his unexpected passing has deeply saddened fans and the music community. Survived by his wife and three children, Beard leaves behind a lasting legacy as a talented musician and influential member of ZZ Top.
