“Markham Revs Up for Inaugural NTT IndyCar Event”

Published:

Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it prepares to host the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a history of racing in Toronto, this event marks the first race held outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.

The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will traverse the Unionville GO station grounds, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To help attendees reach the track, it is recommended to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the event grounds.

Metrolinx is enhancing service on the Stouffville Line to facilitate transportation to and from the track. Additional trips from Union Station to Unionville GO in the mornings and afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as improved York Region Transit services, will be provided. Markham is also offering shuttle services between designated parking lots and the event venue.

Residents of Markham have been impacted by track construction preparations, with restrictions including limited parking at Unionville GO, road repavings, and installation of grandstands and retainer walls. Several roads in Markham Centre, such as Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard, will be closed until Monday morning, with some closures extending until August 27 for track dismantling.

As for the racing action, the spotlight is on the IndyCar event scheduled for Sunday, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points and expected to perform well. Notable contenders include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talents like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also showcase their skills in the support series.

Drivers have expressed excitement and anticipation for the Markham layout, which offers a different challenge compared to Toronto’s track. The smooth surface and elevation changes present unique obstacles for the competitors. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are on sale, while Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions are free to attend as part of Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
