Overwhelmed with disbelief, Geiger recounted how he trembled upon realizing his fortune, even seeking confirmation from a colleague to validate the numbers.
Eager to claim his prize, Geiger promptly contacted the Calgary Stampede. However, his hopes were dashed when he received an email response stating that all prizes for the Show Band 50/50 had either been claimed or the 48-hour window for claiming the prize had lapsed. Disheartened by this turn of events, Geiger expressed his frustration, questioning his oversight and expressing displeasure towards the organization.
In a statement to CBC News, the Calgary Stampede clarified that the Showband 50/50 operates under a lottery license issued by Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC). The organization emphasized the necessity of adhering to the rules and regulations governing the lottery, highlighting that Geiger had contacted them after the stipulated 48-hour claim period had expired, rendering him ineligible for the prize.
Geiger, however, contested the brevity of the 48-hour window, arguing that the ticket did not clearly specify this timeframe. He also critiqued the perceived lack of transparency regarding the rules. The Calgary Stampede explained that unclaimed prize funds are allocated to the Stampede and the Calgary Marching Show Band Association in compliance with AGLC guidelines.
Legal expert Farhad Shekib, based in Toronto, suggested that Geiger could potentially pursue a breach of contract case based on the fairness and clarity of the 48-hour window. Shekib emphasized the importance of transparent communication with ticket purchasers regarding claim deadlines. Geiger expressed his intent to explore legal avenues while advocating for improved consumer protection in such lottery scenarios.
