A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Alberta has experienced a surge in interest following its mention in a popular American TV show, with hopes of attracting more visitors during the upcoming summer season. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, situated about 150 kilometers south of Calgary, was featured in an episode of the acclaimed medical drama series, “The Pitt,” where the character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by actor Noah Wyle, expresses his intention to visit the site for the first time.
The buffalo jump site has historical significance, having been utilized by Indigenous communities for centuries to manage bison herds. The on-site interpretive center showcases Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, guiding guests through a cliff top trail. Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, noted an increase in interest sparked by the TV show mention, leading to a rise in social media engagement and inquiries.
Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, the buffalo jump site typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent attention would result in a boost in visitor numbers, especially during the peak season from May to September. Collaborative efforts with other nearby attractions such as Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park aim to encourage tourists to explore the broader southern Alberta region.
Additional promotional initiatives, including discounts offered through the Canada Strong Pass program, have contributed to the growing interest in the site. Travel Alberta, the provincial marketing agency, capitalized on the TV show mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the show’s characters at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir also shared the TV clip on social media, emphasizing the global impact of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks.
