Jimmy Kimmel stands firm and refuses to offer an apology following a controversial joke where he referred to Melania Trump as “an expectant widow,” leading to demands from the White House for ABC to terminate his contract.
The host of the late-night show made the comment during his recent monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, just days before a disturbing incident occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Kimmel remarked, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
Subsequently, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump criticized Kimmel for supposedly inciting violence. Melania labeled his remarks as “hateful and violent rhetoric” and urged ABC to take action against the comedian.
In response to the backlash, Kimmel defended his joke, emphasizing that it was merely a lighthearted jab at the substantial age difference between Trump and Melania and not a call for violence. He reiterated his stance against gun violence and highlighted his right to free speech under the First Amendment.
The controversy unfolded following an incident where a man attempted to breach the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner armed with weapons, causing chaos and prompting security measures. The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, faces charges of attempted assassination of the US president and is currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings, with a potential life sentence if found guilty.
According to an FBI affidavit, Allen allegedly planned the attack weeks in advance by booking a room at the Washington hotel where the event took place. The incident disrupted one of Washington’s prominent events and raised concerns about security measures at such high-profile gatherings.
