However, Amazon is taking a stand against this trend by announcing measures to block suspected apps providing illegal streams.
Amazon’s crackdown on piracy involves blocking apps identified by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) as facilitating access to pirated content, including those obtained outside the official Appstore. This initiative aims to protect creators and customers from potential malware, viruses, and fraud associated with piracy.
Once flagged, users will receive a notification explaining the reason for app blockage, resulting in the cessation of service. While Amazon will still allow sideloading of applications, official streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, and Prime Video will remain operational. Nevertheless, this move is expected to make it more challenging for users to watch content without subscribing to authorized services.
The enforcement will initially roll out in Europe, with UK users expected to be affected in the future. While this action may deter illegal streaming, it does not address the root cause of the issue, which includes the rising costs of content subscriptions. Analysts believe that while the block is a positive step, the broader problem lies in the escalating subscription fees driven by broadcasters seeking to recoup high sports rights expenses.
Despite the risks associated with illegal streaming such as malware exposure and inappropriate content, these concerns have not deterred individuals from engaging in unauthorized viewing. Amazon’s intervention could mark a significant shift towards ending free access to premium content.
