The head of a leading airline has cautioned that additional flight cancellations are on the horizon following the necessity to scrap certain UK routes.
Eivind Roald, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, took action to cancel flights from London Gatwick Airport to Los Angeles due to a sudden surge in jet fuel prices by over 100 percent in just a few days.
Numerous airlines worldwide have canceled flights due to the ongoing disruption caused by Iran’s control of the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital global supply route. Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues to direct the US Navy to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports.
In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mr. Roald disclosed his expectation of further flight cancellations by airlines. He stated, “While we will maintain operations from London Gatwick, Athens, and Rome this summer with no additional cancellations planned on our end, it’s likely that competitors will announce more cancellations, particularly on short-haul European routes, while long-haul services remain unaffected.”
Following the cancellation of London to Los Angeles flights, Norse Atlantic explained, “Regrettably, we had to cancel our cherished LAX routes due to the unexpected global fuel crisis and the high fuel risk exposure involved, safeguarding our sustainability and commitment to providing reliable service for our summer passengers. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused and pledge to assist affected travelers to the best of our ability.”
The UK Government recently released a statement addressing the escalating concerns regarding jet fuel shortages and the potential for more flight disruptions, in response to alerts from the European Union.
