Starting today, more individuals, including Blue Badge holders, will now be eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard. The criteria for qualifying for this railcard has been expanded to encompass a wider range of both visible and non-visible disabilities.
With a Disabled Persons Railcard, you can enjoy a 1/3 discount on rail tickets, saving an average of £126 annually. The cost for a one-year railcard is £20, or £54 for three years. Additionally, one person aged 16 or above traveling with you can also benefit from the discount. The eligibility for the railcard now includes individuals with certain conditions.
The previous eligibility criteria remain in place, ensuring continued entitlement to a Disabled Persons Railcard. The announcement to expand the eligibility criteria was made in November 2025, with further extensions planned for September 2026.
The forthcoming expansion later this year will encompass specific long-term medical conditions and forms of neurodiversity significantly impacting an individual’s ability to use train services. Detailed information on evidentiary requirements and application procedures will be released prior to September.
Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of broadening the railcard eligibility to facilitate more inclusive and confident rail travel. Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, highlighted the significance of this expansion in promoting a more accessible and affordable railway network for all passengers, aligning with the Accessible Railways Roadmap.
