In the course of my duties, there are certain occasions that carry a sense of formality. They often seem like routine, scheduled, and procedural events.
However, when I step up to the dispatch box today to recite the names of every woman believed to have been killed by a man in the past year, the formalities of my job fade away. This annual task shines a light on the stark reality faced by women in our country and globally on a daily basis. It is a day that never gets easier, and it underscores the weighty responsibility I bear.
Each name I read symbolizes the collective letdown by our Parliament, institutions, and society in safeguarding women from harm. Today, as one of 265 women MPs uniting to observe International Women’s Day, I stand not only as a Minister and MP but also as a part of a significant representation of women in Parliament.
Reflecting on the remarkable achievements of women in various spheres worldwide, I intentionally choose this day to acknowledge the harsh realities experienced by many women. It is a reality that some wish to keep concealed. Merely celebrating achievements while women face violence and death is not progress; it is mere showmanship.
This moment holds profound significance for me. It is not just about honoring lives cut tragically short but also reflects on our national identity and the safety of those we prioritize. Nevertheless, this is not about me; it is about these women and all women and girls enduring threats, abuse, and violence, often at the cost of their lives. Indeed, this is the most challenging day of the year.
Though emotions may overwhelm me, and tears may be held back, I remain committed to honoring women in this manner, despite the discomfort and gravity of the occasion. The ongoing fight is crucial to ensure the safety of women and girls in their homes, streets, and workplaces.
Hence, we are mobilizing the full force of the state to reduce violence against women and girls by half within a decade. This initiative is not just another governmental policy; it is a vital support system, a lifeline.
By prioritizing the protection of women and girls in all our endeavors, we truly pay tribute to these women. But our commitment does not end there. I am resolute in taking every necessary step to create a safe environment for women and girls across the country.
