Reform UK is facing criticism over its performance at Kent County Council, where residents and local figures have described it as a disappointing “horror show” lacking in positive outcomes. The party, led by Nigel Farage, took control of the council a year ago, promising a new era in governance. However, feedback from residents in Maidstone, Kent, indicates little to no improvement in local services under the new administration.
Numerous individuals, including Eileen, Frank, and Paul, expressed their dissatisfaction with Reform’s management, highlighting issues such as neglected road maintenance and a lack of visible progress. Reports suggest that the atmosphere within the council has been confrontational and disorganized, leading to the departure of several Reform councillors since the election.
Critics have pointed to instances of controversial behavior, such as a leaked video showing the council leader using inappropriate language and a general lack of constructive engagement in decision-making. Opposition voices, like Tory councillor Dan Watkins and Labour councillor Alister Brady, have raised concerns about the party’s focus on national politics over local issues, as well as its failure to deliver on campaign promises, such as tax cuts.
Additionally, the council’s Department of Local Government Efficiency project, overseen by a Reform councillor, faced backlash for its alleged ineffectiveness in reducing spending. Charities like Making a Difference to Maidstone reported ongoing pressure on their services, indicating a lack of relief despite promises of efficiency measures.
In response to criticisms, a Reform UK spokesperson defended the council’s performance, emphasizing achievements such as a balanced budget and minimal council tax increases. However, concerns persist about the party’s ability to deliver tangible benefits to the community and fulfill its governance responsibilities effectively.
