New Regulations: Energy Suppliers Must Fix Smart Meters in 90 Days

Published:

Energy suppliers will now be required to fix faulty smart meters within 90 days under new regulations taking effect. Many households have faced issues with smart meters failing to send readings to their providers automatically.

Failure to rectify non-functioning smart meters within the specified timeframe may lead to penalties or legal consequences from the regulator Ofgem. These rules will be enforced starting early May, following recent changes that allow households to claim £40 in compensation for installation-related problems.

Compensation will also apply if a smart meter appointment is delayed for over six weeks, or if the supplier fails to address reported issues within five working days. Smart meters are in use by nearly 40 million homes and small enterprises across the UK.

By 2033, energy suppliers must replace all smart meters still on 2G and 3G networks before these services are discontinued. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to enhance standards, protect consumers, and maximize the benefits of smart meters.

Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the progress made in enhancing the smart meter experience, with a high percentage of satisfied users. These new regulations aim to boost consumer confidence in smart meters and promote their wider adoption for better energy management and cost savings.
