“Power Outage Halts Winter Olympics Curling Opener”

Published:

The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced a sudden power outage just 10 minutes after commencing. The curling events kicked off the Games, but participants had to pause due to the unexpected blackout.

Even though the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some competitions had already begun. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling had to be temporarily stopped due to a power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.

During the disruption, British curlers Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds were in the middle of their match against Norway when officials halted play. Dodds appeared to find humor in the situation, laughing as staff worked on resolving the issue.

BBC commentator Steve Cram, amused by the incident, informed viewers about the power cut causing a pause in play. Fortunately, after approximately five minutes, the lights returned, and the crowd cheered as the competition resumed.

Despite the interruption, Dodds and Mouat secured an 8-6 victory, starting the round robin phase on a positive note. Mouat downplayed the disruption, describing it as a fun dance-like moment amidst the competitive atmosphere.

UK Sport aims for a potential Winter Games medal haul of up to eight, following significant investment totaling over £32.5 million from sources like the National Lottery and government funding over the current four-year cycle.

Eve Muirhead OBE, a former gold medalist at Beijing 2022, now leads Team GB as Chef de Mission for Milan-Cortina 2026. Expressing confidence in the team’s capabilities, Muirhead highlighted the opportunity for the UK to challenge traditional winter sports powerhouses.
