A man previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the notorious Essex Boys murders has been photographed publicly for the first time following his release from prison.
Michael Steele, aged 83, was recently spotted in the county after spending nearly 29 years behind bars for the fatal shooting of three drug dealers in a Range Rover. Dressed in a grey fleece and jeans, Steele was observed engaging in DIY activities outside a residence in his former neighborhood.
Steele, along with his accomplice Jack Whomes, was convicted of the murders of Tony Tucker, Pat Tate, and Craig Rolfe in Rettendon, Essex. However, doubts persist regarding the validity of their convictions.
The Criminal Cases Review Commission is presently reevaluating the 1995 case, prompted by a detailed report submitted by retired Metropolitan detective David McKelvey two years ago. The report from McKelvey’s investigative firm, TM-Eye, advocates for forensic testing on crucial pieces of evidence, such as shotgun shell casings and items recovered from the crime scene.
Following a Parole Board hearing in November 2024, Steele was deemed fit for release after an assessment concluded that the risk of harm posed by him in the community was not immediate. Whomes had been released five years earlier. The review submitted to the CCRC suggests the involvement of an alternate suspect, “Mr D,” in the murders and raises concerns about potential miscarriages of justice within the Essex Police investigation.
The convictions primarily relied on the testimony of a key witness, Darren Nicholls, who alleged that Steele orchestrated the killings. However, the recent investigative report challenges this narrative and points to alternative accounts indicating different perpetrators.
