Gmail users might soon receive a long-awaited upgrade from Google. The tech giant is preparing to introduce a significant enhancement that will allow users to modify their email addresses. Previously, once an @gmail.com address was established, changing it was not an option, requiring users seeking a new name to create a new account instead.
Recently, tech experts at 9to5Google noticed Google’s intention to enable users to make substantial changes to their accounts. A support document outlines the process, indicating that the old address will automatically forward emails to the new one.
This forthcoming feature is likely to be well-received by individuals who created their accounts in the past and are dissatisfied with their current email address or have experienced changes in their circumstances.
Google clarified, “The email address linked to your Google Account is the one used for signing in to Google services, helping you and others identify your account. If desired, users can switch from a gmail.com address to a new one ending in gmail.com, receiving emails at both addresses without affecting stored data like photos, messages, and emails sent to the old address.”
The exact release date and availability of this feature to users remain undisclosed. Notably, Google’s initial announcement was in a Hindi support document, hinting at a potential initial rollout in India.
Stay tuned for additional updates from Google if you are considering changing your current email address and opting for something new.
