“Cruise Assault: Abusive Husband Sentenced for Attacking Wife”

Published:

An abusive husband has been sentenced for assaulting his wife during a cruise marking their 10th wedding anniversary. Alan Dop, on a luxury Mediterranean cruise with his wife, kicked her causing bruising and swelling, as detailed by prosecutor Elen Owen. Additionally, he grabbed her, shook her, and threw her, resulting in back injuries. The incident, witnessed by their seven-year-old son, unfolded amid their decade-long relationship.

Dop’s escalating alcohol consumption had strained their marriage, with the victim asking him to leave, to no avail. Described as extremely abusive when intoxicated, Dop’s behavior culminated in a violent episode at their home following the cruise. Despite efforts to avoid confrontation, Dop’s aggressive behavior led to physical harm, prompting the victim to contact the authorities.

During sentencing, it was revealed that Dop, a former RNLI lifeboatman, had shown remorse and attributed his actions to alcohol-related difficulties. Acknowledging Dop’s prior good character and struggles with alcohol, the judge sentenced him to a suspended 12-month term, cautioning him that he was on his final opportunity to address his issues. A seven-year restraining order was also imposed to safeguard the victim, with contact with the child to be supervised through a third party.
