The Winter Olympics village has apparently exhausted its condom supply despite distributing 10,000 free condoms to athletes. The living quarters for Olympians during the Games are well-known for their vibrant atmosphere, with numerous stories of amorous encounters emerging over time.
Authorities have taken steps to address any potential issues by providing free contraceptives. However, while 200,000 condoms were given out at the Paris Summer Games in 2024, only 10,000 were provided at Milano Cortina. This quantity has proven insufficient, considering there were around 10,500 participants in Paris compared to nearly 3,000 in northern Italy this time.
An athlete, choosing to stay anonymous, disclosed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the condoms quickly ran out in just three days. The athlete expressed uncertainty about when more supplies would arrive.
In an effort to deter off-camera activities, Olympic organizers have introduced so-called ‘anti-sex’ beds, including a downsized cardboard design. Nevertheless, reports suggest that this measure has not been effective.
This shortage of condoms is not unprecedented, as organizers at the Sydney 2000 Olympics had to order an additional 20,000 condoms after the initial allocation of 70,000 was depleted.
The potential outbreak of a sexually transmitted infection would pose a significant risk to the Games. Athletes arriving in Milan were reminded of the importance of prioritizing health through prevention and common sense.
A former Olympic gold medalist shed light on the lively atmosphere of the village, emphasizing the prevalent nature of intimate encounters. The athlete acknowledged the widespread awareness of such activities among participants, officials, and the media, highlighting the integral role of condoms in this environment.
