Canada showed support for winger Tom Wilson after he engaged in a physical altercation to defend a teammate during their decisive victory against France at the Winter Olympics. The intense 10-2 win had already thrilled the audience before Wilson confronted an opposing player.
While fighting is a common occurrence in ice hockey, it is typically discouraged in the Winter Olympics. Nevertheless, with Canada comfortably ahead, veteran player Wilson, from the Washington Capitals, opted to challenge France’s Pierre Crinon.
The altercation was sparked by Crinon’s aggressive hit on Nathan MacKinnon in the third period, which resulted in a penalty for the French player. Despite Canada scoring during the subsequent powerplay, Wilson felt compelled to take matters into his own hands.
Despite knowing that his actions would lead to his ejection from the game, the 31-year-old decided to confront Crinon by discarding his gloves onto the ice. Both Wilson and Crinon were removed from the match for the final seven minutes due to fighting being deemed a misconduct by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
This move, although resulting in his own expulsion, was deemed worthwhile by Canada, who had already secured the victory and were heading to the elimination stage of the men’s ice hockey competition in Italy. Wilson’s teammates in the Canada dressing room supported his actions.
In response to the incident, Canada’s star player Connor McDavid expressed his appreciation for Wilson’s protective instinct, stating, “Willy just finishes a check and the guy jumps him, and Willy’s just protecting himself. That’s all he can do.”
The consensus among the team was that Wilson’s actions were justified, with statements from teammates like MacKinnon emphasizing Wilson’s role as a protector and energy-bringer for the team.
Canada’s head coach Jon Cooper had no issue with the scuffle, considering it minor compared to other hockey incidents. Goalkeeper Jordan Binnington summed up the team’s sentiment, stating, “That’s hockey, right?” The team showed unity and solidarity in the face of adversity, highlighting Wilson’s commitment to his teammates.
