Google has alerted users of the Chrome browser on MacBook devices about the discontinuation of support for older macOS versions. While Chrome will remain functional on MacBooks and iMacs, it will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving users vulnerable to security risks.
Starting in July this year, Google will cease providing Chrome updates for Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, such as macOS Ventura, to ensure ongoing browser support. However, some older Mac models, including iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Air models purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with macOS Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device for continued safe Chrome usage.
According to Google, the final Chrome version to support macOS 12 (Monterey) is Chrome 150. Subsequently, Chrome 151, scheduled for release on July 28, 2026, will mandate macOS 13 Ventura or later for continued updates. While older Chrome versions will still function, no further updates will be available for users on macOS 12. Google recommends transitioning to a supported macOS version like macOS 13 Ventura to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.
Users are urged to adjust their settings promptly to ensure a seamless transition and continued protection against cyber threats.
