“Trinidad and Tobago Shocked by Discovery of 56 Bodies in Cemetery”

Published:

An inquiry has been initiated following the discovery of around 50 infant bodies and six adult bodies that were discarded in a cemetery. Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago revealed that a total of 56 bodies were found at a cemetery in the country, primarily consisting of infants. The Caribbean nation, comprising two islands, has been grappling with escalating crime rates, including fatal gang conflicts, leading to the extension of a state of emergency last month.

The distressing finding was uncovered at a cemetery in Cumuto town on the island of Trinidad, located approximately 40km east of the capital city, Port of Spain. According to law enforcement officials, out of the 56 bodies discovered, 50 were infants, while the remaining six were adults – four men and two women. Five of the adult bodies had identification tags typically used in morgues, and evidence of autopsies was found on a man’s and a woman’s remains. Authorities have not confirmed the identification of any of the bodies yet.

Authorities are actively investigating to determine the source of the human remains and any potential violations of laws or protocols. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro emphasized the importance of treating every cadaver with respect and adherence to legal procedures. He warned that any individual or organization found neglecting this responsibility would face consequences. Initial findings suggest a possible case of illicit disposal of unclaimed bodies.

The United States State Department has issued multiple travel alerts for Trinidad and Tobago since the state of emergency declaration on March 2, citing concerns about crime and an elevated terrorism risk. Despite a significant reduction in violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago since 2024 due to enhanced security measures from previous states of emergency, criminal activities continue to pose challenges across the nation.
